About Events

The Penn Philippine Association organizes several fun events for members of the Penn community to come together to relax and learn about Filipino culture. Throughout the year various events are held to form closer relationships amongst the members and to invite others to join. Every spring, the Penn Philippine Association holds its Barrio Fiesta, which serves as a showcase of the members’ hard work through music and acting.

Barrio Fiesta

Barrio Fiesta is the Penn Philippine Association's spring cultural presentation showcasing the many talents of our members in a theme consistent to the life experiences of Filipino-Americans today. Anyone on Penn's campus can get involved with the many performances, regardless of ethnic background.

Language

The official languages of the Philippines are English and Tagalog (Filipino). However, more than 170 local dialects are spoken throughout the islands! Here are some basic phrases in Tagalog for you to learn:

Magandang umaga.       Good morning.
Magandang gabi.           Good evening.
Kumusta ka na?             How are you?
Mabuti naman.               I'm fine.
Salamat po.                 Thank you. (formal)
