Did You Know?

  • 1 in 10 Asians and Asian Americans is infected with hepatitis B (HBV) for life.

  • Due to a lack of symptoms, many DO NOT KNOW they are infected, giving HBV its nickname: “silent killer”.

  • Hepatitis B, a completely preventable disease, causes 80% of all primary liver cancer cases worldwide.

  • In the US, the minority status of APIs means this silent epidemic is grossly overlooked.

Penn Team HBV was founded January 2009 by board members of the Penn Taiwanese Society. In previous years, the Penn Taiwanese has been dedicated to raising awareness to the disproportionately high incidence of hepatitis B (HBV) and liver cancer among the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community through community service events and volunteering at HBV screening clinics. We shine a new light on our efforts by collaborating with the Asian Liver Center at Stanford University to establish a Team HBV chapter at the University of Pennsylvania. Team HBV chapters are found at universities all across the nation. There are currently chapters at Harvard, Duke, Cornell, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Wesleyan.

Team HBV chapters work to organize campus and community-wide events to raise awareness of HBV, help promote the international Jade Ribbon Campaign in China, and strengthen support for the National HBV Bill in congress. The Jade Ribbon Campaign was launched in May 2001 by the Asian Liver Center to bring people all over the world together in a united effort to eradicate hepatitis B and liver cancer worldwide. This three part campaign of community, global, and political outreach will hopefully move us towards resolving the disproportional prevalence of HBV among the API community.

Penn Team HBV works closely with the members of the Penn Taiwanese Society to organize large events in order to spread awareness of this relatively unknown disease. Our greatest accomplishment so far is raising over $1000 over the past 2 years through our biannual charity basketball tournaments. In the future, we hope to see greater involvement by the Penn community with our efforts. Please contact penntaiwanesesociety(at)gmail.com for any questions and to get involved with our efforts!
