Costume Designer

The costume designer is responsible for deciding what costume would best portray each character in the show. Stimulus makes this an especially interesting position for several reasons, one of them being that Stim shows only have about six cast members. This means that each person plays two or three different characters, depending on the complexity of the production. Each character must be easily distinguished by the children in the audience; that determination is first and foremost a visual one, relying on different costume, and secondly by the actor's portrayal of that character.

Costume designers also work closely with the set designers and the scenic painters. The colors of the costumes and set must be compatible for lighting and aesthetic reasons, but the characters must stand out from the set.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of costume design for Stimulus is the economics. Since we function on a budget, all of the designers are expected to be thrifty. The result is lots of imagination, creativity, and fun.
