TECHNICAL DIRECTORIn most cases, the technical director coordinates all the technical elements of the show. These are primarily set, sound, lighting, costumes, and props. The technical director oversees all the above departments, ensuring that they are all on schedule and meshing smoothly, and is responsible for working out any problems that pop up both within and between departments. At Stim, the above description is mostly handled by the producer, leaving the technical director to focus exclusively on the set. The technical director functions as a master carpenter, and it is their responsibility to build the set from the ground up, using the set design as a blue print. The technical director follows the set design in terms of physical appearance of each set element to the letter, although exactly how to create the elements is under the sole discretion of the technical director. However, any material changes to the set must be cleared by the director and producer. The technical director is reponsible for obtaining all materials required to build the set, including lumber, paint, and any furniture required, and must stay within the approved budget. The technical director is reponsible for overseeing the set crew. Ideally, the technical director will delegate work in order to develop the skills of the set crew, and will pass as many skills as possible to the set crew over the course of building the set.
