On the Court
We are members of the East Coast Women's Club Basketball League, and as a result, we are able to play teams as close by as Drexel University, and as far south as University of North Carolina. The regular season takes place in the fall and culminates in the Maryland Tournament at University of Maryland in November to decide the conference champions.
In Fall 2006, we competed in tournaments at UNC, Delaware and Maryland. At UNC, we had the opportunity to play North Carolina State twice, UNC-A, and UNC-B. Although we only won one game, this certainly did not reflect the quality of Penn Club Basketball, and the amount of change that took place from Saturday to Sunday was definitely a reflection of our team’s continuous growth and improvement. This progress showed in the next tournament at Delaware, where were defeated Drexel, Rutgers and Mary Washington. At the Maryland Tournament, we beat Johns Hopkins, but lost to UNC-B again, although it was much closer that our first game.
In Spring 2007, we had the opportunity to travel to Atlantic City to participate in Atlantic Cape Community College’s tournament, and also hosted two tournaments, one at Hutchinson Gym and the other at The Palestra. At our tournament at the Palestra in April, our improvement from the beginning of the year definitely showed. We started out with a victory over ACCC 49-46, as well as JHU, 54-25. In our final game of the season, we defeated Rutgers 35-34. Definitely a great way to end the season!
Next season, we hope to compete in just as many, if not more, tournaments in both the Fall and the Spring. Taking part in the ECWCB gives us an opportunity to play in competitive games against other good teams without the time commitment involved in playing Division-I Varsity sports. All of our games take place on the weekends so they don’t conflict with academics, and they also allow for plenty of bonding time in the car and outside of game time! We hope you'll come join us!
