Events for 2010-2011
  • April 26 | Elections
    We will be having elections for the 2011-12 PGWISE Executive Board on Thursday
    April 26th from 12-1pm at the Penn's Women's Center.  All are welcome to attend
    for a FREE (first come, first served) lunch and to vote for the PGWISE board
    members for next year.  This is your chance to have your voice heard about
    what you want to see PGWISE do next year and to determine who the best
    candidates are for the job!

    A description of the board positions is located here and the
    outline for the election process is as follows:

    1. Candidates may announce their candidacy up to 24 hours before the elections.
    2. Each candidate gets to do a 3 minute speech.
    3. Each candidate gets asked up to 3 questions.
    4. Candidates are escorted out of the room for vote.
    5. Vote is done by ballots
    6. Candidates, if not voted into position, may run for a different position.
    7. If candidate cannot be present, she may send a representative.

  • March 26 | Graduate Women in Science and Engineering Alumnae-Student Luncheon
    For our fourth annual luncheon, PGWISE has invited graduate alumnae from Biomedical Graduate Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics, and Engineering to meet and mingle with current graduate students over hors d'oeuvres and a buffet lunch. Furthermore, we are very pleased to announce that Dr. Andrea Liu who is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Professor of Physics has agreed to be our keynote speaker. Participants will receive a program with contact information for most of the alumnae participants. The luncheon will be a great opportunity for you to get advice about career planning, learn more about possible companies or job tracks, and make connections with Penn graduates who are eager to share their experiences.

  • February 23 | Happy Hour
    Drink to celebrate the arrival of spring with PGWISE and City Tap House!! Penn Graduate Women In Science and Engineering has arranged a special happy hour at City Tap House to celebrate the early arrival of spring. Enjoy $2 select craft beers chosen from City Tap's extensive draft menu, as well as a selection of appetizers (vegetarian options too!). Tell your friends - all grad students are welcome.

  • February 11 | Lunch Meeting
    Are you interested in teaching at a small liberal arts college after grad school? Are you interested in discussing the current state of women in science at research universities such as Penn? Do you want to learn more about how gender bias affects how scientists are evaluated in the classroom? Then come to PGWISE's Feb. 11th lunch discussion with Swarthmore Professor Amy Bug! 

    Prof. Amy Bug is a professor of computational condensed matter physics at Swarthmore University. In addition to being a full-time professor, she is actively involved in promoting women in science via undergraduate mentoring and studying the paucity of women in physics.  http://130.58.92.210/BUGZ/amy_home.htm

  • January 21 | Lunch Meeting
    Wondering how to handle a tricky situation in the lab? Feeling satisfied with the way you or someone you know resolved a problem with a colleague or advisor? Have ideas for how your program could improve graduate student working conditions? Join other science grad students and post-docs for lunch and discussion. We'll also spend some time talking about different school policies for student procedures and grievances, and provide a list of campus resources that may be helpful in solving lab-related problems. Lunch will be from Desi Village.

  • November 16 | Lunch Meeting
    Whether you are currently looking for a job or just beginning to consider your options, it is important to know about all of the resources Penn has to support you during this process. Enjoy lunch from Jimmy John’s and meet Rosanne Lurie from Penn Career Services (http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/careerservices/). Hear a short presentation about about what Career Services has to offer and discuss options and strategies with fellow graduate students.
    All graduate students are welcome as well as any recent graduates who would like to hear or share advice!

  • October 19 | Lunch Meeting
    Are you a graduate student approaching the end of your studies? Do you have questions about graduating? Come to share your tips and comments about going through the final stages of your study and research here at Penn. We welcome graduate students at all levels and post-doc fellows, whether you are graduating, graduated or just interested in how to graduate! Enjoy refreshments from Hummus (vegetarian options), meet new fellow students, and get some tips that will help you in planning your study.
